The Right Hardware Makes All the Difference
Reclaimed wood behaves differently from kiln-dried commodity lumber off a big-box shelf. It is often denser, harder, and more chemically reactive due to decades of oxidation and mineral absorption. Standard zinc-plated fasteners can corrode and stain old-growth oak within weeks. Cheap polyurethane finishes can trap moisture in partially seasoned barn wood, causing blistering and mold.
We stock accessories and hardware that we have tested firsthand in our own shop and on customer projects. Every product on these shelves is selected because it works with reclaimed wood, not against it. When in doubt, ask our staff. We have seen what fails and what lasts.
Product Categories
From heavy structural connectors to fine finishing oils, we carry the full range of accessories needed for residential and commercial lumber projects.
Structural Connectors
Heavy-duty connectors engineered for timber framing, post-and-beam construction, and structural applications. These connectors are essential when working with reclaimed timbers because the wood is often non-standard in dimension. We carry adjustable and universal-fit options that accommodate the real-world sizing of salvaged beams.
Fasteners
We carry a full line of screws, nails, bolts, and lag fasteners with a strong emphasis on corrosion-resistant options. This matters enormously for reclaimed wood. Old-growth hardwoods like white oak and chestnut have high tannin content. When tannins react with bare steel or zinc, they produce dark stains that bleed permanently into the grain. Our stainless steel and ceramic-coated fasteners eliminate this problem entirely.
Screws
- 305 Stainless steel construction screws (interior/exterior)
- 316 Marine-grade stainless for high-moisture applications
- Ceramic-coated deck screws (ACQ-compatible)
- Trim-head and finish screws for millwork
- Structural timber screws (up to 14" length)
Nails & Bolts
- Stainless steel ring-shank nails for siding & sheathing
- Hot-dipped galvanized common nails (all sizes)
- Cut nails for authentic period restoration
- Carriage bolts, lag bolts, through-bolts (stainless & galv)
- Timber rivets and split-ring connectors
Wood Finishes & Sealants
Our finish selection prioritizes products that are both high-performance and environmentally responsible. We focus on low-VOC, zero-VOC, natural oil-based, and water-based formulations that protect wood without off-gassing harmful chemicals into your living and working spaces.
Natural Oil Finishes
Penetrating oils that soak into the wood fiber rather than forming a surface film. They enhance grain character, allow the wood to breathe, and are easy to repair without sanding. Ideal for reclaimed wood where you want to see and feel the texture.
- Tung oil (pure & modified)
- Linseed oil (raw, boiled, polymerized)
- Danish oil blends
- Hardwax oil (matte, satin, gloss)
- Hemp oil finishes
Water-Based Finishes
Low-odor, fast-drying, and low-VOC. Water-based polyurethanes and lacquers have improved dramatically in durability and now rival solvent-based products for hardness and wear resistance. They do not amber over time, preserving the natural color of the wood.
- Water-based polyurethane (floor & general)
- Acrylic lacquer
- Water-based stains (interior & exterior)
- Whitewash & liming wax
- Zero-VOC sealers
Exterior Protection
UV-resistant, water-repellent formulations designed for decks, siding, fencing, and outdoor furniture. We stock both film-forming and penetrating exterior finishes. For reclaimed wood used outdoors, penetrating finishes generally outperform film-forming products.
- Penetrating deck oil (UV-stabilized)
- Exterior wood stain (semi-transparent & solid)
- Wood preservatives (borate-based)
- End-grain sealer
- Exterior spar varnish (low-VOC)
Brackets & Hangers
Decorative and functional brackets for shelving, mantels, countertops, and exposed beam installations. We carry both industrial-style steel brackets that complement the raw aesthetic of reclaimed wood and traditional wrought-iron designs for period-appropriate restoration projects.
Tools & Supplies
A curated selection of hand tools, finishing supplies, and maintenance products that we use in our own shop daily. We do not try to be a hardware store. We stock the specific tools that are most useful for working with reclaimed lumber.
Why “Reclaimed-Compatible” Matters
Standard hardware store products are designed for modern kiln-dried softwood lumber. Reclaimed wood presents different challenges that demand different solutions. Here is what we mean when we say a product is reclaimed-compatible:
Corrosion Resistance
Old-growth hardwoods contain significantly higher tannin levels than modern plantation-grown lumber. Tannins are naturally acidic and react aggressively with bare steel, zinc plating, and even some aluminum alloys. The result is black staining around every fastener and accelerated corrosion of the metal itself. Our stainless steel (305 and 316 grades) and ceramic-coated fasteners are chemically inert to tannin reactions. They will not stain white oak, chestnut, or cedar regardless of moisture exposure.
Hardness Compatibility
Reclaimed heart pine, old-growth Douglas fir, and antique white oak are dramatically harder than their modern equivalents. Standard drywall screws and framing nails will bend, snap, or strip before driving into these materials. We stock hardened structural screws with self-drilling tips, high-carbon steel nails designed for dense hardwoods, and pre-drill bits matched to specific fastener sizes. Pre-drilling is not optional with reclaimed hardwood. It is essential.
Breathable Finishes
Film-forming finishes like standard polyurethane can trap residual moisture inside reclaimed boards that may not have reached equilibrium moisture content. This leads to blistering, peeling, and in worst cases, mold growth beneath the finish. We recommend penetrating oil finishes and breathable hardwax oils for most reclaimed wood applications. These products protect the surface while allowing moisture vapor to pass through, preventing the trapped-moisture problems that plague film finishes on older wood.
Dimensional Tolerance
Reclaimed lumber is rarely the same dimension as modern lumber. A salvaged 2x4 may actually measure 2 inches by 4 inches (not the modern 1.5 x 3.5). Our structural connectors and brackets include adjustable and universal-fit models that accommodate non-standard dimensions. We also carry shimming and packing products for bridging the gap when mixing reclaimed and modern framing members.
Our Eco-Friendly Commitment
We would not sell reclaimed lumber and then stock finishes full of formaldehyde and heavy metals. Every finish, sealant, and coating we carry meets at least one of these standards: low-VOC or zero-VOC certification, plant-based or mineral-derived ingredients, GreenGuard Gold or equivalent indoor air quality certification, or Cradle to Cradle material health rating. We read the safety data sheets so you do not have to.
