Who We Are

Philadelphia's Reclaimed Lumber Headquarters

Philadelphia Lumber Co. was founded in 2010 by two former construction workers who couldn't stand watching perfectly good lumber get thrown into dumpsters at demolition sites. What started with a used pickup truck and a garage in Kensington has grown into the region's largest reclaimed lumber operation — processing over 1 million board feet annually from our facility at 13200 Townsend Rd.

We buy, sell, process, and deliver reclaimed and sustainably sourced lumber for residential contractors, commercial builders, architects, furniture makers, and DIY homeowners across the Philadelphia tri-state area. Every board that passes through our yard is inspected, graded, and prepared to meet or exceed structural and aesthetic standards.

Our operation is built on a simple principle: wood is too valuable to waste. We rescue lumber from demolition sites, barns, factories, warehouses, and bridges — then process it into premium building material with character you simply cannot find in new-growth wood.

The Reclaimed Advantage

Why Reclaimed Lumber?

Every piece of reclaimed wood carries history, character, and an ecological advantage that no freshly milled board can match.

Saves Forests

Every reclaimed beam is a tree that stays rooted. We divert thousands of board feet from landfills monthly, reducing demand for virgin timber and preserving old-growth ecosystems. The U.S. throws away an estimated 26 million tons of construction debris annually — we help keep lumber out of that number.

Superior Character

Reclaimed wood has tight grain patterns, rich patina, and structural density that only decades of natural aging can produce. Old-growth heart pine has up to 30 rings per inch compared to 4–6 in modern plantation pine. The result is harder, more stable, more beautiful wood.

Carbon Storage

Wood is nature's carbon vault. A single board foot of lumber stores approximately 1.5 lbs of CO₂. When that board hits the landfill, it decomposes and releases stored carbon as methane — 80x more potent than CO₂. Reclaiming lumber keeps that carbon locked away for generations.

Inventory

What We Carry

Our inventory changes weekly as we source new reclaimed material from demolition sites across the region. Here are the species and products we typically stock.

Heart Pine

1,225 lbf
Age: 100–200 yearsSource: Demolished mills & factories

The crown jewel of reclaimed lumber. Tight grain, warm amber tones, and extraordinary hardness. Sourced from pre-1900 industrial buildings across the Eastern seaboard.

White Oak

1,360 lbf
Age: 80–150 yearsSource: Barns, bridges, warehouses

Dense, rot-resistant, and stunning. Reclaimed white oak develops a silver-grey patina that architects love. Ideal for flooring, furniture, and structural beams.

American Chestnut

540 lbf
Age: 100–200+ yearsSource: Pre-blight barns & cabins

Functionally extinct since the 1940s blight, reclaimed chestnut is the only way to get this legendary species. Warm brown tones with exceptional workability.

Douglas Fir

660 lbf
Age: 80–150 yearsSource: Industrial timbers & railroad

Straight-grained and incredibly strong. Old-growth Douglas fir beams from demolished warehouses are perfect for exposed structural applications and timber framing.

Eastern Hemlock

500 lbf
Age: 60–120 yearsSource: Barns & agricultural buildings

Affordable and versatile, hemlock is our most available species. Light in color with a subtle grain pattern. Excellent for rustic siding, paneling, and fencing.

Barn Wood Mix

Varies
Age: VariousSource: Regional barns & outbuildings

Mixed-species boards with authentic weathered character. Available in grey, brown, and red patinas. Perfect for accent walls, cladding, and creative projects.

Zero-Waste Philosophy

We don't just sell reclaimed lumber — we live and breathe circular economy principles. Sawdust becomes animal bedding. Off-cuts become kindling or mulch. Metal fasteners get recycled. Nothing goes to waste. Period.

Our 98% waste diversion rate means that for every 1,000 board feet of lumber we process, less than 20 board feet equivalent ends up in a landfill. The rest is repurposed, recycled, composted, or converted into energy. We've been zero-waste certified since 2018, and we track every stream meticulously.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is reclaimed lumber?
Reclaimed lumber is wood salvaged from demolished buildings, bridges, barns, and other structures, then processed for reuse instead of landfilling.
Is reclaimed wood safe and structurally sound?
Yes. We inspect, grade, metal-detect, and kiln dry on request so reclaimed stock meets structural and safety expectations.
Do you have a minimum order?
No minimum for yard pickup. Delivery typically starts at 200 board feet; milling minimums vary by service.
How does pricing compare to new lumber?
Common reclaimed softwoods can price similarly to new lumber, while rare species like heart pine and chestnut cost more for their character and density.
Do you ship outside the Philadelphia area?
Yes. We deliver in the tri-state region and ship nationally via LTL freight—shipping depends on weight and destination.
